Meet The Team
President
Alissa Katsaras
My name is Alissa Katsaras and I am so excited to be ASM’s president for the year of 2024. I hope to spend my term prioritizing student research and career development, while also expanding microbial literacy and engagement in our surrounding community. I will be working with a wonderful team of officers to fulfill this mission. I look forward to serving the microbiology community and sharing my passion for research.
Research Interests
I am passionate about learning more about viral infections and vaccine development. I currently work in Dr. Jones’ virology lab where I will be genetically engineering EcN to express the norovirus capsid protein as a vaccine delivery system. I hope to continue studying novel vaccine therapeutics by getting my PhD in clinical microbiology after undergraduate.
Vice President
Shruthi Sama
My name is Shruthi Sama and I am honored to be your vice president. This year, I hope to prioritize expanding student engagement and creating opportunities for underclassmen to get more involved and meet student mentors that can help guide them into the field that they would like to go into. I am excited to make it happen!
Research Interests
I am currently a pre-med student and am passionate about health disparities. Currently, I do research with the Stofer lab and have primarily focused on social prescribing and its potential within the US as a treatment. I am also plan on working as an EMT and getting my masters in infectious disease/epidemiology before going to med school!
Treasurer
Chloe Van Horn
My name is Chloe Van Horn, and I am honored to be your treasurer this academic year. My goal for this year is to provide fun and engaging fundraising opportunities so that we can host a variety of amazing events, ranging from Research Symposiums to field trips.
Research Interests
I am currently involved in two UF research labs: I am researching the effects of the maternal microbiome on rates of pediatric obesity, and I am also researching the pathogen Francisella, specifically to identify antibiotics that are effective against it and how it may form a relationship with amoeba to sustain itself in the wild. Although these experiences have been very interesting, I am still open to pursuing other areas of research as I apply for graduate programs.
Secretary
Neha Kashyap
My name is Neha Kashyap and I am honored to be serving as the Secretary of ASM for the 2024-2025 academic year. The main goals for my term are to increase member engagement and keep our members updated about the many opportunities in microbiology available at UF and beyond. I will strive to be a friendly and reliable point of contact throughout this year so that ASM can meet the needs of every member. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments related to ASM, feel free to either reach out to me at n.kashyap@ufl.edu or to the official ASM email at asmgators@gmail.com.
Research Interests
I have gained research experience in a few different fields during my undergraduate years, but my primary research interests are in applying bioinformatics to antibiotic discovery and microbiome sequencing and analysis. I am currently conducting research in the Chevrette Lab to scour bacterial genomes for biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) that are indicative of novel antimicrobials, using various bioinformatics approaches as part of the Tiny Earth initiative. After undergrad, I plan to gain some real-world experience with bioinformatics before pursuing a PhD in computational biology.
Public Relations
Erika Prendes Martin
My name is Erika Prendes Martin and I’m honored to serve as ASM Gator’s 2024 - 2025 Public Relations officer and first online officer on our chapter’s executive board. In my role, I hope to increase involvement with online students and connect gators studying outside of Gainesville to more opportunities in the world of Microbiology.
Research Interests
I have experience working as an intern Research Assistant for the Dr. Martens-Habbena Lab at the UF/IFAS Fort Lauderdale REC where I studied the microbial ecology and kinetics of ammonia-oxidizing archaea in agricultural and wetland soil. My passion is to continue working in environmental microbiology making discoveries of how microbial communities are impacted by anthropogenic activity and contribute to global climate change. In the future, I also aspire to use my skills in microbiology and interest in ornithology to enter the work of avian virology. With an emphasis on the ecology of microbial and avian species, I'm interested in seeing how practices in bioinformatics and microbial analysis techniques bridge the gap between these two particular research areas, and contribute to sustainability and conservation efforts.
Lead Event Coordinator
Naomi John
My name is Naomi John and I am so excited to be ASM’s Lead Event Coordinator for the 2024-2025 school year. I hope to establish a more interconnected organization by providing more opportunities for our members to interact with each other. I am looking forward to working with the other event coordinators to increase the number of social and outreach events in the hopes that students will be able to form strong and meaningful bonds with each other.
Research Interests
As a pre-medical student, I have always been interested in the world of healthcare and the different challenges within the field. I currently do research with Dr. Liao, where we focus on observing the effects of different drugs/ treatments on cancer cells. After graduation, I hope to go into medical school and expand upon my knowledge of the microbial world.
Social Event Coordinator
Nyla Searl
My name is Nyla Searl, and I am excited to be ASM’s Social Event Coordinator for the 2024-2025 school year. I hope to execute creative and meaningful events to help educate UF students about the many opportunities the Microbiology field offers. I look forward to expanding my network and working with fellow officers to have a great year.
Research Interests
I am passionate about learning more about microbes and cell science. I currently work in the Liao lab in the Cancer and Genetics Center which explores drug treatments of cancer cells and how different organelles interact with each other. I hope to continue studying cell science and microbes around us.
Outreach Event Coordinator
Kryshna Miller
Hello, my name is Kryshna Miller, and I am honored to serve as Outreach Event Coordinator for the 2024-2025 school year. I hope to foster a fun, collaborative environment for our members and individuals in other communities. In doing this, I also plan to emphasize the importance of microbiology to students and the public alike. I am looking forward to planning events that connect UF’s ASM with other communities and form lasting memories with the other members.
Research Interests
I am currently a pre-med student, and I do research in Dr. Fujii’s lab in the Center for NeuroGenetics within the College of Medicine. Primarily, my lab and I research how errors in protein translation can lead to the development of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's, ALS, Huntington's disease, and more. I hope to one day start my own project where I study how lifestyle choices, like diet and exercise, can impact translation fidelity and if there are certain lifestyles that are more prone to the development of neurodegenerative diseases. I also hope to one day attend medical school.
